French Army Order of Battle, 10 May 1940
While a full orbat for 10 may 1940 shouldn't be too difficult to put
together, it's not quite as straightforward as it first seems. The French
army's historical branch still hasn't released a complete "official" history
of the campaign. Instead, there is a massive 3-volume work of about 2,500
pages of Corps and Divisional histories on which this orbat is based. However,
it does not give any information on units below division level held in
the general reserve nor on those overseas units which were not sent to
mainland France during the campaign. The orbat below reflects these limits.
Finally, this orbat is for 10 May 1940 only, much reshuffling of units
took place in the following days.
The BEF is included in this OB because it was integrated into the 1er
Groupe d'Armées. It was, of course, never part of the French Army.
The letter W in the abbreviated unit designation was used by the French
army to distinguish British from French units, e.g. 48e DI is the
French 48e Division d'Infanterie while 48e DIW is the British
48th Infantry Division.
Finally, for the time being, this orbat only gives the corps assets
and attached units and divisions will be added as I type them up. Once
a corps' divisions are typed in and the page updated, I'll change the abbreviated
corps designation to a hyperlink.
